Faith is not the gift, salvation is, see below in Ephesians 2:8

1- salvation - being saved is by grace
2- salvation by grace comes by/thought faith ( genitive case )
3- salvation by grace does not come from yourself- this ( nominative case ) refers to salvation ( nominative case ) which is the gift by Gods grace.
4- salvation is the gift (nominative case )of Gods grace

conclusion: gift, salvation and this are all in the nominative case is in agreement therefor they point to salvation as the gift not faith.

Barnes the Calvinist Theologian agrees below- faith is mans responsibility.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible
This is the work of God - This is the thing that will be acceptable to God, or which you are to do in order to be saved. Jesus did not tell them they had nothing to do, or that they were to sit down and wait, but that there was a work to perform, and that was a duty that was imperative. It was to believe on the Messiah. This is the work which sinners are to do; and doing this they will be saved, for Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth, Romans 10:4.

conclusion: gift, salvation and this are all in the nominative case is in agreement therefor they point to salvation as the gift not faith.

And AT Robertson the premier NT Greek Scholar below :

For by grace (τῃ γαρ χαριτι [tēi gar chariti]). Explanatory reason. “By the grace” already mentioned in verse 5 and so with the article. Through faith (δια πιστεως [dia pisteōs]). This phrase he adds in repeating what he said in verse 5 to make it plainer. “Grace” is God’s part, “faith” ours. And that (και τουτο [kai touto]). Neuter, not feminine ταυτη [tautē], and so refers not to πιστις [pistis] (feminine) or to χαρις [charis] (feminine also), but to the act of being saved by grace conditioned on faith on our part. Paul shows that salvation does not have its source (ἐξ ὑμων [ex humōn], out of you) in men, but from God. Besides, it is God’s gift (δωρον [dōron]) and not the result of our work.11 A.T. Robertson, Word Pictures in the New Testament (Nashville, TN: Broadman Press, 1933), Eph 2:8.

Except the word “salvation” never once appears in Ephesians 2:8 (in English or Greek). Draw from that whatever conclusion you choose.

Ephesians 2:8 [YLT] for by grace ye are having been saved, through faith, and this not of you -- of God the gift,

If God supplies the GRACE and you supply the FAITH and “ye are having been saved by grace, through faith”, then: How is it “NOT OF YOU”, but “OF GOD THE GIFT”?
The FAITH is of you, contrary to Ephesians 2:8, according to your claim. That is the essence of synergism.

The faith and grace are from God, not from us.

Faith comes to us from God when we hear Him speak to us.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17

Grace the divine ability to do what we can not do on our own, also comes from God and is imparted to us along with faith.

Grace is the ability to obey what we hear God speak to us.

Faith is the substance of the thing we are hoping for when we hear God speak to us.

Example:

By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. Hebrews 11:7

When God warned Noah of the flood and instructed him to build the Ark, Noah now had faith to build the Ark.

When he started moving and building the Ark, he activated his faith that he received from God to produced the intended divine result of creating an Ark; something that had never been done, nor had it ever rained.

The grace he also received along with the faith, enabled him to continue in this project for 120 years until he successfully completed it, and also enabled him to round up the animals and get them in the Ark and to provide for their food during the flood.

Ephesians 2:8 - For it is by free grace (God’s unmerited favor) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation) through [your] faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God. (AMPC)

You know words in brackets (like “[salvation]”) are added by the translators for clarification and are eisegetical in nature. They are being honest to warn you that they are “adding to the words in this book” by placing them in brackets to caution that those are not part of the original “God-breathed” text.

It is a human assumption that “this” (which appears as a word in the Greek) is “[salvation]” (which does NOT appear as a word in the Greek). That is the danger of the Amplified Bible … conflated the word of men for the words of God.

σῴζω a synonym for σωτηρία.

Doug
In Ephesians 2:8 there are gender issues between the words that you are ignoring. The “gift” is more than one word in the verse (hence the neuter). The OP is built on a WORD (“salvation”) that does not actually appear in the verse being “explained”.

What gender issues between what words…?

The “gift” is more than one word in the verse (hence the neuter).
1) δῶρον is always a neuter noun.
2) δῶρον is only used once

The OP is built on a WORD (“salvation”) that does not actually appear in the verse being “explained”.
The words in question (σῴζω and σωτηρία) all deal with the concept of being saved, rescued, thus salvation. One who is saved has experienced salvation; thus the gift of being saved is nothing less than salvation.

Your argument is much ado about nothing, and only reveals the desperation of your objection.

The Amplified Bible uses brackets to enclose words for brief commentary that help clarify the text. This provides additional context and meaning for understanding the original text. In a nutshell what I shared from the AMPC in Ephesians 2:8 reaches the same conclusion that civic reached in post #1.

Ephesians 2:8

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:”

In Ephesians 2:8 we have a classic example of an metonymy. The only faith that saves us legally is the faith of Christ, for no man can have faith in God, the faith that meets the requirement of a Royal law, a faith that is produce by perfect obedience to its laws! Jesus Christ alone had the faith that honoured God's law in all points, from conception, to death, in thoughts, words, and deeds ~ and this faith alone is the means of man's free justification. This faith is not of ourselves, it is the gift of God secured for God's elect by our surety, Jesus Christ. This faith is given to us in regeneration when the Spirit of God creates a new man within us after the image of his Son, Jesus Christ.

When a man hears and believes, it is not the old man (for that is impossible) but his new man that is a creative work in God's elect by the almighty power of God~this birth happens to a child of God sometimes after conception and before death, and is evidenced by faith and obedience to the word of God. Two prime examples of this is John the the Baptist and the thief on the cross.

I could spend more time proving the metonymy in Ephesians 2:8 by the context in just before verse 8, in verses: 4-6..."But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:"

We were IN CHRIST from all eternity, even while he lived in this world and in his death and resurrection, which secured our redemption for us. What he did, it was as though we did it, what happen to Christ happened to us legally speaking two thousand years ago.

Hello there,

Why don't we let the word of God speak, and leave our own understanding out of it, for it is our own understanding that mars the beauty of God's gift by grace, and brings error in it's train.

In Christ Jesus
Chris

'And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Wherein in time past ye walked
according to the course of this world,
according to the prince of the power of the air,
the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past
in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind;
and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
But God, Who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us,
Even when we were dead in sins,
hath quickened us together with Christ,
( by grace ye are saved )
And hath raised us up together,
and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
That in the ages to come He might shew the exceeding riches of His grace
in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
For by grace are ye saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
For we are His workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus unto good works,
which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.'

(Eph 2:1-10)

Praise God!

David everything you said is very true and biblical, but it leaves many questions unanswered, which is where the great divisions is within the professing kingdom of God among those that profess to believe. You said:

But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved!
Was God's love sought or unsought by the sinner? Could man who is born at enmity against God (not just an enemy which is bad enough, but at enmity, or at war against the God of heaven) desire, or even have the spiritual strength to do so, that is, to seek God's love? Romans 8:1-8 must be address and answer in light of these two questions. Again you said:
Grace Faith Salvation = is not of yourself = no one can boast
Brother, this is true, but "whose faith" is under consideration by Paul, that is NOT of ourselves, that is of man (which is impossible) or Christ which is the heart of free justification that is revealed in the gospel of Christ from faith to faith, that Paul was ready to proclaim. that went to the Jews first, and then to the Gentiles nations.

Is it not true, that if we have any active part in our salvation from sin and condemnation, then it IS OF OURSELVES, is not? These are the questions that separate professing Christendom, that should can can be answer to keep the sheep from wolves who seek only to scattered and to destroy.

Exactly my point and God's instruction to us.

SEE here:
"The goodness and kindness of God leads a man to repentance"
"Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures."

The only faith that saves us legally is the faith of Christ, for no man can have faith in God,

The faith we receive when we hear the Gospel is the faith that comes from God, as a gift.

When we hear the faith from God comes to us, and is now our faith; His faith we received as a gift.

When we act in obedience to what we hear, then our faith we received from Him is activated to produce the intended divine result, whether healing, salvation, justification, the constructing of an Ark….

If it is the Gospel we hear, then we must obey the word repent. This is called obeying the gospel.

If we repent then we will be saved.

This principle is called the obedience of faith.

But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: Romans 16:26

And THIS not of yourselves does not point to faith, as correctly stated above.
(or it would be in the feminine).

So it could either point to SALVATION,,,,
BUT
salvation is ALSO in the feminine.

Or it could point to the GROUP, which would be in the masculine....l
The group consists of all that is mentioned:
GRACE
FAITH
SALVATION

To say nothing of the fact that FAITH is part of SALVATION,,,,

AT Robertson has HIS opinion.
Other Greek scholars do not agree with him...
nor does the actual language used.
