Are Members of Christ’s Body Part of a “Priesthood?”

It is a widely held belief and teaching among Protestants that all believers in Christ are part of a priesthood. This teaching began with the proclamation of it in Luther’s famous treatise, On the Babylonian Captivity of the Church, published in 1520:

“How then if they are forced to admit that we are all equally priests, as many of us as are baptized, and by this way we truly are; while to them is committed only the Ministry (ministerium Predigtamt) and consented to by us (nostro consensu)? If they recognize this they would know that they have no right to exercise power over us (ius imperii, in what has not been committed to them) except insofar as we may have granted it to them, for thus it says in 1 Peter 2, ‘You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a priestly kingdom.’ In this way we are all priests, as many of us as are Christians. There are indeed priests whom we call ministers. They are chosen from among us, and who do everything in our name. That is a priesthood which is nothing else than the Ministry. Thus 1 Corinthians 4:1: “No one should regard us as anything else than ministers of Christ and dispensers of the mysteries of God.”

Of course the “they” and “them” referred to in this quote is the Roman Catholic Church, which established that only those men appointed through an ordination process were to be referred to as “priests,” effectively erecting a wall (themselves) between God and ordinary believers.

No doubt, Luther’s intent was to bring this wall down, and there was everything right about this intention, but in doing this he (and those who followed in his footsteps, e.g., Calvin) created something just as wrong as the erroneous RC doctrine creating a separate, priestly class of believers; wrong because it attempts to apply a designation to the body of Christ that doesn’t belong to it.

If it doesn’t belong to the body of Christ, to whom does the priesthood designation belong? As his proof text, Luther quotes 1 Peter 2:9, one of seven places the word appears in the new testament. The entire passage in 1 Peter 2 that deals with the subject is as follows:

1 Peter 2:5-12

5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an
holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

9 But ye are a chosen generation,
a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not
obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

12 Having your conversation honest
among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

Note in verse 12, in italics, the designation, “the Gentiles”. I put an emphasis on this because I wanted the reader to see that Gentiles here are clearly distinguished as a separate group from this royal priesthood of believers Peter is addressing in verses 5 and 9. Also notice that these priests of God are also referred to as “an holy nation, a peculiar people,” and in this context it is them that have obtained mercy, not the Gentiles.

The “Royal Priesthood” is a fulfillment of OT Prophecy

Let’s connect some dots in the OT scriptures with those in the NT scriptures, that will clearly identify who these folks are, and dispel any notion that they were or could have been what is referred to as “the church, which is his (Christ’s) body.”

In the book of Deuteronomy we first see the label, “a peculiar people”:

Deut 14:2

“…for thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath
chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.”

And in Exodus 19:6 we find the phrases “holy nation” and “kingdom of priests.”:

Ex 19:6

And ye shall be unto me a
kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

Previous to this verse was the verse that gave the qualification for these “peculiar people” to become this “kingdom of priests”:

Ex 19:5

Now therefore,
if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

If ye will obey…and keep my covenant, then ye shall be……”

As those who have studied the old testament know, “they,” “the nation,” which turns out to be Jacob’s twelve sons, aka, the “twelve tribes of Israel,” did not hold up their end of this covenant made with them, which resulted in God giving the priesthood to the tribe of Levi, and then commanding the other eleven to support to them. Therefore, Exodus 19:6 was left unfulfilled.

Protestant theology teaches that Exodus 19:6 has been fulfilled in the Christian church, which is often referred to as “spiritual Israel”. This is because the “holy nation” of Exodus 19 is Israel. Moreover, this is believed because it plainly says that Jesus came “not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 15:23), and according to Matt. 16:18, to establish his church on earth, to which Peter was given the keys (vs. 19).

Since reformed theology makes no distinction between Paul’s revelation and the rest of new testament scripture, it therefore concludes that where Peter refers to a “royal priesthood”, he must needs be referring to what Paul referred to as “the body of Christ.” In a nutshell, according to reformed theology, all the unfulfilled prophecy in the old testament about Israel, has been fulfilled in the Christian church.

But hold on. There’s a fly in this ointment. That fly is that Paul referred to his revelation as a “mystery…not made known unto the sons of men….kept secret since the world began…hid from ages and generations,” which has to mean that what he established was not revealed in the prophetic scriptures (the old testament). Moreover, he claimed in two places in the epistle to the Romans, that his mission was to Gentiles, not Israel.

Furthermore, in the four gospels, and what is referred to as “the Hebrew Epistles” (which would include Peter’s letters), something called “the body of Christ” is never once mentioned. The reason for this is very simple: all of this part of the new testament scriptures is a part of prophecy, and the body of Christ is a part of Paul’s mystery, and prophecy and mystery are mutually exclusive.

Finally, the words “priest,” “priests,” and “priesthood” are never used by Paul in his epistles as an alternate description for the body of Christ.

Conclusion

The nation of priests referred to in Exodus 19:6 is, indeed, Israel under the new covenant, and will be fulfilled in the group of people Peter refers to as a “royal priesthood”, and to whom John refers to in the Revelation as “kings and priests.”

Notice, I said will be fulfilled, which means it is something that is yet in the future. What has been going on since the writing of these scriptures—for almost 2000 years now—is not the new testament, but, rather, Paul’s mystery, which he identified as “the dispensation of the grace of God.” Within this dispensation, Paul reveals that everyone, Jew and Gentile alike, is being placed into a spiritual entity called the body of Christ by believing “the gospel of Christ.” In contrast, Gentile believers under the new covenant are in a subordinate, subservient position to Israel, but in the grace dispensation they are in the position of being fellowheirs.” Things that differ, are never the same.

While ministerial offices were created by the Apostle Paul for the purpose of edifying the body of Christ ((Ephesians 4:11,12)) those who occupy these offices are never referred to as “priests,” nor is any other member of the body referred to as such. It is therefore incumbent upon believers in Christ today to adhere to the “form of sound words,” by attending to the things our apostle, Paul, said. In doing this we will be enabled to come to a full understanding of who we are (and who we are not), and what God would have us to be doing and saying, that we may be accounted “workman that needeth not to be ashamed.” Amen.

If the Israelites did not fulfill Exodus 19:5-6 because they did not submit to the Torah, then people who also have not submitted to the Torah have no grounds to think that they have replaced the Israelites. However, the Israelites went through redemption cycles where they turned away and back towards God, so it is not the case that they never kept the Torah. The Israelites had priests and were a nation of priests, so it is like a fractal pattern where the relationship between the High Priest and the Levites was like the relationship between the Levites and the other Israelites, which is like the relationship between the other Israelites and the other nations.

A chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a treasure of God's own possession are terms used to describe Israel (Deuteronomy 7:6), so Gentiles who are included into Israel through faith in Christ also have the opportunity to follow the instructions that God gave to Israel for how to fulfill those roles. In Ephesians 2:12-19, Gentiles were at one time separated from Christ, alienated from Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, and without hope and God in this world, which is all in accordance with Gentiles at one time not being doers of the Torah, but through faith in Christ all of that is no longer true in that Gentiles are no longer strangers or aliens but are fellow citizens of Israel along with the saints in the household of God, which is all in accordance with Gentiles becoming doers of the Torah.

The royal priesthood, an holy nation, will be Israel to the future Gentile nations on the earth. On the other hand, God has a distinct purpose for the Body of Christ, eternal in the heavens. Paul tells us to set our affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
(2 Corinthians 5:1-2)

For our conversation (citizenship) is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according
to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

(Philippians 3:20-21)

For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;
(Colossians 1:5)

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

(Colossians 3:1-4)

I haven't found any verses in Paul's epistles saying we'll be priests.

Actually that royal priesthood= The little flock( Luke 12:32)= The 144,000( Rev 14:3) who are bought from The Earth. These will serve as kings and priests on thrones( Rev 1:6,, Rev 20:6)--The great crowd( Rev 7:9) no man can number are the-OTHER SHEEP( John 10:16) who are not of that fold. It says-these also i must bring= into Gods kingdom rule on Earth. And they will become one flock.)--so its a 2 part set up= 144,000 promised heaven---Great crowd are promised Earth( Matt 5:5-Psalm 37:9,11,29=new Earth-Gods kingdom rule in 100% control forever. All things back to perfection( Rev 21:1)
 
Gentiles Cleave to Israel: Israel’s Role in Teaching and Leading the Nations

The Bible describes a future time when Gentiles will cling to Israel, seeking to learn the ways of God. This is the fulfillment of God’s ultimate plan for Israel to guide the nations. From the beginning, He gave the descendants of Jacob the responsibility to uphold and teach His laws. In the last days and throughout the millennial reign, He will give them the strength to carry out this assignment completely.

What It Means for Gentiles to Cleave to Israel

The word "cleave" in the Bible means to hold on tightly and remain connected.
Isaiah 14:1 describes this:

"For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob."

This passage reveals to us that the Gentiles will hold onto Israel because they will see that God is with them. They will no longer try to create their own ways to serve Him but will look to Israel for guidance.

Israel Was Always Meant to Teach the Nations

From the beginning, GOD gave Israel the responsibility of teaching righteousness. The law was given to them, not to any other people. Isaiah 2:2-3 speaks of the nations turning to Israel for wisdom:

"And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem."

Micah 4:1-2 repeats this prophecy, making it clear that Israel will be the source of instruction for the world:

"But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem."

God entrusted this role to the descendants of Jacob. The law will not come from any other source. In the last days, when order is restored, the nations will recognize that Israel was always meant to lead them in righteousness.

The Messiah’s Reign and Israel’s Leadership

Though Israel is given the responsibility to teach, Jesus is the King who will reign over all.
Zechariah 2:11 describes how God will bring the nations to Himself:

"And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee."

The nations will worship God, but they will not be in charge. They will follow the order that He established, with Israel leading them in obedience to His commandments.

Israel Ruling with the Messiah During the Millennial Reign

The Bible makes it clear that Israel will not only teach the nations but will also rule alongside the Messiah.
Revelation 5:10 declares this:

"And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth."

This verse confirms that God has appointed Israel as both rulers and priests under the authority of the Messiah. They will not just be teachers but will exercise authority over the nations. Their leadership will not come through their own power but through God's divine order. This aligns with Daniel 7:27, which states:

"And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him."

Israel’s role will not just be one of instruction, but of active governance in righteousness. The nations will be under their rule, learning God’s laws from those He has chosen.

Gentiles Will Actively Seek Israel’s Guidance

The Gentiles will not resist Israel’s leadership. They will recognize that God is with His people and will seek to follow them.
Zechariah 8:23 speaks about this moment:

"Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you."

The world will no longer be divided in confusion. The nations will no longer create their own religious paths. They will know that God is with Israel, and they will come to them for guidance.

Israel Was Given the Oracles of God

The reason Israel holds this responsibility is made clear in Romans 3:1-2:

"What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God."

God gave His laws, His wisdom, and His truth to Israel. That has not changed, and it never will.

Israel’s Future Role in the Kingdom

For centuries, Israel has been scattered and mistreated, but God has not forgotten His promises. In the last days and during the millennial reign, He will restore His people to their rightful place. They will no longer be oppressed or hidden. Instead, they will be the ones guiding the world in righteousness, just as God intended from the beginning.

Israel will not follow the nations. The nations will follow Israel. The law will go forth from Zion, and God’s people will be the ones teaching it. The world will not stay in disorder. God will bring everything into its proper place, and Israel will fulfill the role He gave them long ago.

Conclusion

The Bible is clear
. God chose Israel to lead the nations in righteousness. The Gentiles will cleave to them, not to change them, but to learn from them. As Israel follows the Messiah, they will teach the world what is right. In the last days, God will restore Israel to their position, and the nations will no longer follow their own ways. They will look to Zion, where the truth has always been. Through Israel, God’s laws will reach the entire world, just as He planned from the beginning.
