Titus 2:1,
- but speak thou the things which become sound doctrine
Joshua the sixth book in the English Old Testament.
Study: How God grants gifts to His people and how this relates to His greatest gift: The sacrifice of His Son.
I believe everyone will enjoy this and be a great blessing to those willing to study.
Remember when you read the scriptures. Read them like you have no personal biases, (open mind and honest heart).
Joshua 6:1-21, 25,
- Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel none went out and none came in
- and the Lord said unto Joshua see I have given into thine hand Jericho and the king thereof and the mighty men of valour
Note: given or grant means: to give, to hand over, to deliver, to grant.
God has made His declaration of divine certainty.
God has given the city to them and they are instructed on how to act accordingly.
God has already guaranteed them victory, so God has promised the city to them.
This is Gods free gift.
Heres why: God supernaturally gives them the victory. Gods people did not win the battle by their own military might.
This is important to understand.
So, they did not earn the victory by their own doing. God gave it to them.
V.3,
- and ye shall compass the city all ye men of war and go round the city all ye men of war and go around the city once,
Thus shalt thou do six days
V.5,
- and it shall come to pass that when they make a long blast with the rams horn and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet all the people shall shout with great shout and the wall of the city shall fall down flat and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him
V.14,15
- and the second day they compassed the city once and returned into the camp: so they did six days
- and it came to pass on the seventh day that they rose early about the dawning of the day and compassed the city after the same manner seven times, only on that day they compassed the city seven times
V.16,17
- and it came to pass at the seventh time when the priests blew with the trumpets Joshua said unto them Shout for the Lord hath given you the city
- and the city shall be accursed even it and all therein to the Lord only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house because she hid the spies that we sent
Note: God has passed judgment on deep longstanding evil.
Jericho was a Canaanite city.
They practiced child sacrifice(Molech, Baal), idolatry, sexual perversion.
In Genesis 15:16 God told Abraham the Canaanites sin was not yet full, implying He gave them centuries to repent before judgment came.
Divine judgment has been passed on the wicked Canaanites. They are outside of Gods covenant.
Therefore accursed means total destruction physically and spiritually as God has passed divine judgment on them.
Just as He did in the days of Noah.
Outside Gods covenant without faith and repentance, no hope.
Ephesians 2:12,
- you(gentiles) were at that time seperated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenant of promise having no hope and without God in the world
Back to Joshua, 6:20-21; 25,
- so the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets and it came to pass when the people heard the sound of the trumpet and the people shouted with a great shout that wall fell down flat so that the people went up into the city every man straight before him and they took the city
- and they utterly destroyed all that was in the city both man and women young and old and ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword
- and Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive and her fathers household and all that she had and she dwelled in Israel even unto this day, because she hid the spies which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho
Questions
Was the city of Jericho given as a gift to Israel by God?
Did Gods people have instruction and work to do in order that they obtain this free gift?
Or did Gods people earn their victory by their own work that God commanded them to do?
The new testament tells us what saved Rahab and how the Israelites received Gods gift.
Couple more questions: What does the Bible call their marching around the city?
Was it?
1. Their faithfull trust in God, knowing that God keeps His promises when we follow His instruction?
2. Their trust in themselves and their own work, knowing they could March enough times around to cause the walls to fall down?
Romans 4:3,
- for what saith the scripture...
The answer is found in the new testament.
Hebrews 11:30,
- by faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven times
Marching around was their faith according to the scripture.
Therefore marching around, obeying Gods commands is works salvation? Not according to the Bible.
Marching around in obedience to Gods commands is being saved by faith.
Faith apart from works(faith alone)?
Did they just believe God or do/work His commandments?
Honest hearts that are not hardened can answer this.
- I have given it to you...
Gods free gift.
What do you call faith + works of obedience?
Works salvation?
Or salvation by Grace through faith?
The Bible teaches they recieved Gods gift by their obedient faith.
That's not called works salvation.
That's called trusting God by simply doing what He says to do
James 2:25,
- likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works when she had received the spies and had sent them another way
James 2:17,
- even so faith if it hath not works is dead being alone
Hebrews 5:8-9,
- though Jesus were a Son yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered
- and being made perfect He became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him
The faith that saves is the faith that obeys.
