What is the law of faith?

Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.
Romans 3:27-28

  • but by the law of faith.

Law here means principle. A rule of action.

How do we receive faith?

Faith comes to us by hearing.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:17

We receive faith from God; when we hear His word to us.

This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Galatians 3:2

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
John 10:27

By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
Hebrews 11:7

Noah heard the word from God and responded by building the Ark.

By faith literally means we hear and respond to do what we heard.

This principle is called the obedience of faith.

This term contextually frames the entire book of Romans and is found in the last and first chapters.

But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: Romans 16:26

By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: Romans 1:5

The law of Gravity

Faith is Like Gravity. When you throw a ball up into the air, do you wonder if the ball will fall back toward the ground or keep accelerating into space? That’s an absurd question, right? You may not be able to see gravity, but you trust its existence because you constantly see the effects of gravity.

Faith is similar to gravity in that you can’t see it, but the effects are undeniable.

Yes sir so true.

The principle of faith requires a certain element for it to be complete and therefore activated so as to produce the intended divine result.

Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
James 2:17

The work “works” here in the verse refers to an action.

Not the works of the law.
Not work that earns a wage.
Not good works.
Not works of righteousness.

The work or action that James is referring to is discovered if we read on.

  • Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?

But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? James 2:18-22

The work James is referring to is the corresponding action of obedience.

Abraham obeyed when asked to sacrifice his Isaac on the altar.

This is the same principle of faith we see Paul write about in the book of Romans.

When we hear His word we then receive faith.

If we hear His word and to not do what we hear, the faith we have is dead, dormant, inactive and incomplete and therefore unable to function, just as a body without a spirit is incomplete and unable to function so also faith if it does not have the response of doing what was heard is dead.

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
James 2:26

Makes me think of how God put eternity in the heart of every person Ecclesiastes 3:11

So there is an innate, unexpected inclination to cry out to Him in times of trouble. It’s why someone once observed that there are “no atheists in foxholes.” When people who don’t believe in God are in trouble, they are forced to call out to someone or something.

So it's about who are you going to put your faith in.

Revelation 6:15-16 predicts that many will call out to “mountains and rocks” to hide them from the judgment of God during the Tribulation.

Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.
Romans 3:27-28
