The Hardness of People’s Hearts

All sin is sin. No, killing a person, beating up someone, lying, theft, homosexuality, lust, etc. are all sin, and the penalty for any one is no greater than the penalty for any other: Spiritual Death, separation from God for eternity.
Courtesy of Adam and Eve, we leave the starting line (born) in that position (spiritually dead and separate from God) ...

Ephesians 2:1-3 [NASB]
And you were dead in your offenses and sins, in which you previously walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all previously lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the rest.

Psalms 58:3 [NASB]
The wicked have turned away from the womb;
These who speak lies go astray from birth.

No, 1 John 3:4, James 2:10, and Rom 6:23 make it clear that any violation of God's law is equal to any other violation of God's law, and there is one penalty for violation of God's law. Man has made grades of breaking laws, and a scale of different violations. But in the Law of Moses, murder was punishable by death, and so was disrespect to your parents.
Exodus 20:13-15 [NASB]
13 "You shall not murder."
14 "You shall not commit adultery."

15 "You shall not steal."

  • In the law of Moses, what was the penalty for MURDER?
  • In the law of Moses, what was the penalty for ADULTERY?
  • In the law of Moses, what was the penalty for STEALING?

Numbers 35:16-28 [NASB]
16 'But if he struck him with an iron object, so that he died, he is a murderer; the murderer must be put to death. 17 'And if he struck him with a stone in the hand, by which he would die, and [as a result] he did die, he is a murderer; the murderer must be put to death. 18 'Or [if] he struck him with a wooden object in the hand, by which he would die, and [as a result] he did die, he is a murderer; the murderer must be put to death. 19 'The blood avenger himself shall put the murderer to death; he himself shall put him to death when he meets him. 20 'Now if he pushed him in hatred, or he threw [something] at him with malicious intent, and [as a result] he died, 21 or [if] he struck him with his hand with hostility, and [as a result] he died, the one who struck him must be put to death; he is a murderer. The blood avenger shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.
22 'But if he pushed him suddenly, without hostility, or threw any object at him without malicious intent, 23 or had any deadly stone, and without looking he dropped [it] on him so that he died, while he was not his enemy nor was he seeking to harm him, 24 then the congregation shall judge between the one who fatally struck [the victim] and the blood avenger in accordance with these ordinances. 25 'And the congregation shall save the one who committed manslaughter from the hand of the blood avenger, and the congregation shall return him to his city of refuge to which he fled; and he shall live in it until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil. 26 'But if at any time he goes beyond the border of his city of refuge to which he flees, 27 and the blood avenger finds him outside the border of his city of refuge, and the blood avenger kills him, he will not be guilty of bloodshed, 28 because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest the one who committed manslaughter may return to the land of his property.

Leviticus 20:10 [NASB]
"If [there is] a man who commits adultery with another man's wife, one who commits adultery with his friend's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death."

Exodus 22:1 [NASB]
"If someone steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it, he shall pay five oxen for the ox and four sheep for the sheep--"
Is any violation of God's law REALLY equal to any other violation of God's law according to Moses?

That is the same word, sure, but it is a different application. If you read the rest of the verse, you see that it is not divorce that is being promoted, but living in peace. It is not giving the righteous spouse permission to divorce, but that they are not required to maintain the relationship. Do you not understand the meaning of "for any other reason"?

atpollard and I both gave you Scripture that shows different levels of punishment and rewards, but you don't even believe that. Apparently it doesn't matter what the Scripture says on this topic. You're still going to believe what you want. You're a legalist, just like most Church of Christ people are - I know, you don't go to that church, but you sound similar in your beliefs.
