Spiritual Edification

Spiritual Edification is an important topic repeatedly referred in the New Testament. Do not be just satisfied with the experience of salvation. We need to grow, move forward. God has just begun a good work in us, still much more to be done.

“Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.” Romans14:19
The word used for “edification” in the New Testament is oikodomé, which translates literally as “the building of a house.”

I like this analogy'. The Gothic arch was a very popular structure in medieval architecture. The primary advantage of the arch was its strength and stability, which it derived from the fact that each stone in the arch leaned on the one beside it. This system of mutual support enabled the construction of much larger structures than might otherwise have been built. The Gothic arch could be a symbol of the church. The very fact that we need one another gives the church its strength. And the minute we decide to stop leaning on one another, we fall.

Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.” 1Thessalonians 5:11.

According to Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, the word indicates the promotion of “spiritual growth and development of character of believers, by teaching or by example, suggesting such spiritual progress as the result of patient labor.”

Christian maturity requires a radical reordering of one’s priorities, changing over from pleasing self to pleasing God and learning to obey God. The key to maturity is consistency, perseverance in doing those things we know will bring us closer to God.

Reminds me of

1Co 3:9 We are coworkers belonging to God. You are God’s field, God’s building. (NET)

I've long had issues with how most people approach the subject of "edification".

They usually come from the "view point" of providing edification themselves. Edification actually requires a hierarchy. Not everyone has the same office. Not everyone are the "eyes and ears" of the "body" that God has built in the "Church". The "Bride" of Christ.

I've found that most people want to be "my helper". To "edify" me by replacing who actually edifies among us.

Paul appealed to his authority in edification.

2Co 13:10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction.

Some seek destruction and not edification. Edification often requires tearing things down....

2Co 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

There is no edification without obedience to Jesus Christ.
