Spiritual Edification

Spiritual Edification is an important topic repeatedly referred in the New Testament. Do not be just satisfied with the experience of salvation. We need to grow, move forward. God has just begun a good work in us, still much more to be done.

“Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.” Romans14:19
The word used for “edification” in the New Testament is oikodomé, which translates literally as “the building of a house.”

I like this analogy'. The Gothic arch was a very popular structure in medieval architecture. The primary advantage of the arch was its strength and stability, which it derived from the fact that each stone in the arch leaned on the one beside it. This system of mutual support enabled the construction of much larger structures than might otherwise have been built. The Gothic arch could be a symbol of the church. The very fact that we need one another gives the church its strength. And the minute we decide to stop leaning on one another, we fall.

Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.” 1Thessalonians 5:11.

According to Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, the word indicates the promotion of “spiritual growth and development of character of believers, by teaching or by example, suggesting such spiritual progress as the result of patient labor.”

Christian maturity requires a radical reordering of one’s priorities, changing over from pleasing self to pleasing God and learning to obey God. The key to maturity is consistency, perseverance in doing those things we know will bring us closer to God.

Reminds me of

1Co 3:9 We are coworkers belonging to God. You are God’s field, God’s building. (NET)

I've long had issues with how most people approach the subject of "edification".

They usually come from the "view point" of providing edification themselves. Edification actually requires a hierarchy. Not everyone has the same office. Not everyone are the "eyes and ears" of the "body" that God has built in the "Church". The "Bride" of Christ.

I've found that most people want to be "my helper". To "edify" me by replacing who actually edifies among us.

Paul appealed to his authority in edification.

2Co 13:10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction.

Some seek destruction and not edification. Edification often requires tearing things down....

2Co 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

There is no edification without obedience to Jesus Christ.

had a nice edifying meeting yesterday at our Saturday morning mens discipleship group yesterday at my house. We were discussing the Trinity. Then after one of them who is an elder was helping me with a door install then we went out to breakfast and continued the conversation as he had questions about modalism. So it went great and I think of edifying as building one another up in the faith, encouraging each other and I would say yesterday was a nice day of "fellowship" which you don't get on a Sunday morning church service.

I agree. The Holy Spirit edifies and we help each other. Whether we like to recognize this or not, we are all at different levels of understanding in our lives than each other. I've meet some very very talented young people and I've meet some very childish older people. Some grow very quickly but many do not.

A simple conversation among believers is often very edifying. No pretense. No requirements from traditional order of services or some teacher loving to hear himself speak.

Yes the 4 of us that meet on Saturday mornings at my house also meet with the larger group at church on Thursday mornings mens group. Our initial goal with the larger group was that it would develop some smaller groups or even 1 on 1 that meet regularly outside the Thursday morning group. Our Saturday group is more intimate where we share things we probably would not with the larger group. Sometimes we don't even talk about the bible but just share things we are going through or doing with our families. We don't have a set agenda like going through a particular bible passage or a book. But we normally have open discussions on any given bible topic or even recap what took place on Thursday morning and maybe go deeper. All the guys on Saturday morning say its their favorite time of the week for them. So thats encouraging and God is using it to build one another up in the faith, fellowship, trust, friendship etc.... 2 of the men are elders and the other has been a believer for a few years and is really hungry and growing. In fact he will be in the rotation on Thursday mornings in 2026 leading the group in a time of devotion and discussion. That would not of happened apart from the Saturday morning group. So its awesome to see God moving in their lives and the growth. I can see it in all of them.

PTL !!!

on a side note from Saturday morning the younger believer after reading the handout I provided on the Trinity and having the open discussion- Q/A said I needed to get a YouTube channel lol. I told him I don't like the camera and prefer the in person discussions or the forum here. I said I pretty much debate the Trinity/Deity of Christ on a daily basis so it just comes out from memory with all the questions/objections we get all the time on forums for decades. I know you are pretty much wired the same lol. I don't think there is a question/objection we have not heard 100's of times before and addresses on these forums.

the only thing I would look for would be to Meet Christ. Literally...

Anything else could be the ego?

yes, a sweet soul can encourage another soul...that makes sense.
