The various languages of men are both a blessing and a curse. They are a blessing in the fact that by studying languages where they "meet" in a common publication throughout history, you can study to the point of actually understanding what is being communicated more accurately. (The Scriptures are the definitive choice among manuscripts)
You must understand that Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Chinese, English and etc are all constructed by mankind. As such, they are flawed. I've had the privilege in my life of being around various cultures to the point of witnessing "first hand" some of their customs and practices that influence their respective languages and perceptions. If you've had such experiences, you should realize just how language is driven by necessity and culture. It is not often true that reason is actually the driving influence in languages. There is an except to this fact to be found in Greek. However, it is not perfect. Greek is one of the most "reasoned" languages to have ever existed among humanity. It is why the NT is largely written in Greek. It is why the origins of the OT were translated into Greek in the LXX collection.
It is so very important for us to realize that language can be a hinderance in our struggles to knowing God. God wants it this way. It separates those that are seeking God from those who are following others. I'm not saying you need to learn these languages. I am just using them as examples. I am saying you need to study them relative to the Scriptures. You should know all the references available to you in this "age of information". Just realize that all of them are not true. Some of them have an agenda. Just recognize what you have right at your fingertips today. You have most all of the words. You have various resources that you can use to double and triple check their use throughout the Scriptures. You can find where those words deviate from one another and how some "scholarly" works/choices are actually wrong.
Relative to English.....
French and Latin have a very distinct influence upon English. Some good, some bad. Watch out for words derived from French. Be skeptical of words derived from Latin. Not because of Catholic influence but because of OLD Latin. Contrary to popular belief, Latin was "in flux" at the time of Christ through to the 3rd and 4th century. Which is one of the reasons the Vulgate was sought.
I'd like hear from others here. What are you thoughts on how languages have played a role in society and understanding God?
I will say that I believe there is a perfect heavenly language (not necessarily the tongues of Pentecostalism). That "tongue" helped to bridge the languages of men. I believe there is a perfect form of communication in Eternal places.
