The sin nature is called by Paul "the old man." It is crucified. That means dead.
"Somehow purged"? You talk like Jesus couldn't do that. Oh ye of little faith! Don't you know that Jesus is the CREATOR? All born again Christians have a new nature. It is our nature that Jesus says MUST BE BORN AGAIN. It is why Jesus came. It was to destroy the works of Satan who gave us the sin in our old nature we were born with. It is why a born again Christian cannot commit sins unto death, lawlessness. Once born again, Jesus then matures the fruit of the Spirit and is the type of lesser sin (sins not unto death) that are being cleansed in 1 John 1:7. "But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin."
