Crisis of Faith

You never know how much you really believe anything until its truth or falsehood becomes a matter of life and death to you.
C. S. Lewis, A Grief Observed

What on earth would cause a strong and devout Christian to doubt their faith? Why would a member of the popular Christian music group ZOEgirl, which toured the world giving altar calls and inspiring many young teens to proclaim their faith and “shout it from the mountain,” suddenly have doubts?

I have heard stories of Christian kids who walk away from their faith after being challenged by skeptical professors in a college classroom. My faith was confronted in a similar way … but not at a university. It was challenged in the pews of a church. It was rocked by a pastor who had won my trust, respect, and loyalty. This was an educated, intellectual, calm, and eloquent church leader—someone who expressed love for Jesus. He was a brilliant communicator, and he had a bone to pick with Christianity.

Meeting after meeting, every precious belief I held about God, Jesus, and the Bible was placed on an intellectual chopping block and hacked to pieces. Identifying himself as a “hopeful agnostic,” this pastor began examining the tenets of the faith. The Virgin Birth? Doesn’t matter. The Resurrection? Probably happened, but you don’t have to believe in it. The Atonement? That would be a nope. And the Bible? God forbid you believed Scripture was inerrant. He pointed out that even the high schoolers had moved beyond that primitive notion. During our discussions, many in the class dismissed “fundies” (fundamentalists) as fearful dimwits who simply followed what they were told to believe.

I had a conversation about this pastor and his teaching and was advised to find a new church. And I followed their advice. God delivered from this particular form of progressive christianity.

I would later learn that this dismantling of doctrinal tenets—where all the beliefs someone was raised with and had never questioned are systematically pulled apart—is something progressive Christians call deconstruction.

Today, many of the most popular Christian authors, bloggers, and speakers are progressive. Entire denominations are now filled with those who identify as such. Yet many other Christians sit in pews every Sunday completely unaware that their church has adopted progressive theology.

This, then, is my account of reconstructing my faith. Today, my Christianity doesn’t look exactly like it did before. I’ve adjusted my beliefs on certain theological points and have become much more careful in how I interpret the Bible. I’ve dropped some not-so-biblical ideas that were such a part of my Christian identity that I’d never thought to question them.

But throughout this journey, I’ve discovered that the core historic claims of Christianity are true. I’ve learned that the Bible, though attacked and maligned century after century, stands tall atop the rubble of accusations that have been piled up against it.

No offence but I'd say that's an oxymoron for if they are doubting their faith they never were strong. Oh they may have come to know theology and gave lip service to it but having true relationship and fellowship in the Spirit and if you've tasted of the powers of the world to come doubt would be a thing of the past. That don't mean you won't struggle at times to receive from God but you're not going to doubt God is there.

Why would a member of the popular Christian music group ZOEgirl, which toured the world giving altar calls and inspiring many young teens to proclaim their faith and “shout it from the mountain,” suddenly have doubts?
You can function doing Christian things but does that mean you truly have fellowship with the Spirit? No. One can be in churches and see what you do in sequence to have a good meeting but none of it may be real to your inward spirit.
I have heard stories of Christian kids who walk away from their faith after being challenged by skeptical professors in a college classroom.
To walk away from their faith...what does that mean. If they had an intellectual knowledge and mentally assented to things as being true that doesn't mean they have a relationship with God.

It was rocked by a pastor who had won my trust, respect, and loyalty. This was an educated, intellectual, calm, and eloquent church leader—someone who expressed love for Jesus. He was a brilliant communicator, and he had a bone to pick with Christianity.
If he had reservatons about what many churchmen say about Christianity fine. But if he says he loves Jesus he isn't going to set aside clear statements of the one he calls his Lord.
The Virgin Birth? Doesn’t matter.
If he heard my teaching of WHY Jesus was born of a virgin and why he had to be I suspect he wouldn't say doesn't matter.

Entire denominations are now filled with those who identify as such. Yet many other Christians sit in pews every Sunday completely unaware that their church has adopted progressive theology.
I don't believe that at all. I actually have my own YouTube channel and web site and podcasts and if anything there's far more sound Biblical teachers then what you call the progressive types.
Today, my Christianity doesn’t look exactly like it did before. I’ve adjusted my beliefs on certain theological points and have become much more careful in how I interpret the Bible.
You don't say in what but there can be adjustments that can be made and should. Depends on what you're talking about.
I’ve discovered that the core historic claims of Christianity are true. I’ve learned that the Bible, though attacked and maligned century after century, stands tall atop the rubble of accusations that have been piled up against it.
Sure. Good to see you've stayed and acknowledged that.

James gives us some wonderful steps for combat readiness. "We are more than conquerors" we have a surpassing victory over trials and adversity through their faith in Jesus Christ. But we are still in a battle.

James 4:7–8: “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” This passage from James is boot camp for believers—basic training for those preparing for battle:

Submit to God. There should be no outright rebellion against God in our lives that would give the devil a foothold.

Come near to God. This is a prayer life focused on intimacy with the Lord. This life of intimacy is a place of protection in the midst of warfare.

Wash our hands and purify our hearts. This call to holiness is essential if we are to stand victorious.

In the midst of submitting to God, drawing near to Him, and walking in holiness, we are able to resist the devil.

It is important to understand that we do not simply do these things once and then leave them behind. Warfare is constant. We are called to vigilance.

Submission, intimacy, holiness, and resistance to the devil will need to be a part of every day’s prayer life

I make sure to put on the whole armor of God right after I pray in every morning during our devotions.

Because Spiritual Armor is useful only if we put it on!

If we are defeated in the warfare, if we are wounded in an unprotected place because we are without armor, it’s not the fault of our Commander in Chief. God has given us everything we need to battle valiantly and victoriously in one Manual—the Bible. And the Bible doesn’t say, “Wait for God to put it on you” but “Put it on yourself.”

It is the Christian’s personal responsibility to appropriate the armor of God in his or her own life. This war is not something we fight as a group; every believer is involved in a personal battle with Satan. If we are not individually and personally implementing the armor of God, we are going to be victims instead of victors.

The armor is ready for us to put on—and we need to do that. We need to be continually arming ourselves for the warfare. Only then will we be prepared to go out and win the battles that will inevitably come against us.

The Warrior Prayer

Your warriors prepare for battle
Today we claim victory over Satan by
putting on the whole armor of God!

We put on the Girdle of Truth!
May we stand firm in the truth of your word
so we will not be a victim of Satan's lies.

We put on the Breastplate of Righteousness!
May it guard our hearts from evil
so we will remain pure and holy,
protected under the blood of Jesus Christ.

We put on the Shoes of Peace!
May we stand firm in the Good News of the
Gospel so your peace will shine through
us and be a light to all we encounter.

We take the Shield of Faith!
May we be ready for Satan's fiery darts
of doubt, denial and deceit so we will not be
vulnerable to spiritual defeat.

We put on the Helmet of Salvation
May we keep our minds focused on you
so Satan will not have a stronghold
on our thoughts.

We take the Sword of the Spirit!
May the two-edged sword of Your Word
be ready in our hands so we can expose the
tempting words of Satan.

By faith your warriors have put on
the whole armor of God!

We are prepared to live this day
in spiritual victory!

Amen

I think I will start using that prayer. The last thing I want to happen is to be a victim of Satan's lies. Thanks for posting it.

This topic reminds me of ideas I have seen necessary for church strength. First consider some of the problems focusing around the sermons or teachings on Sundays.

The worst of course is teachings far away from scriptural concepts. But it also can be bad if only teaching weaker topics such as how to be happy with ideas only loosely on scripture. Similarly, a message may be built off one word or idea of a passage that actually is just a minor or incidental concept of the passage.

It gets better if scriptures are taught with aid in understanding the context, meaning, and best reason for knowing the passage. But this still can be too narrow, especially if the problems addressed do not apply so well in the people's current situation.

There are key passages that really ought to be shared often such as John 1, especially the first 18 verses. In John 1, it should be clear why John speaks of logos and what beginning is in verse 1. The divinity of Christ in the Godhead should be emphasized so that people could have this argument ready if others challenge the thinking.

Something like the virgin birth also ought to be addressed with the passages but also with the importance in the theological context. It would be noted that the divine Son is critical because the eventual death on the cross would simply be martyrdom without Jesus being divine. It seems the interconnection of details of scripture becomes important to make something like the virgin birth make sense and thus be remembered and appreciated as needed.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds, Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
2 Corinthians 10: 3-5

The conscious mind basically receives information from two sources, namely the internal and external sources. The internal source of information is the unconscious mind while the external sources are the five physical senses. The unconscious mind hosts the record of past things that happened to us whether good or bad, positive or negative. The conscious mind does not have the capacity to hold information for a long time. It is where thinking, analysis and perception take place.

What you see, watch, feel, taste, smell and hear affect your thinking. The devil also takes advantage of these to inject afflicting or obsessive thoughts into your mind. Sometimes, you want to stop what you are thinking about but you cannot stop thinking about it. This is actually the nature of obsessive thoughts the devil injects into your mind. For instance, the devil injects sexual thoughts and images in your mind; you start thinking about it and cannot stop thinking about it even when you want to quit. At this point your Human Will has been weakened; your level of resistance against such thoughts is reduced. Your thought pattern has been hijacked by invisible and powerful beings. It is torture to be in that state of mind. In this situation, you cannot overcome these thoughts by thinking positive thoughts. Your mind is under attack by mind-binding spirit.

The solution to this is to firmly and verbally talk to the evil spirit that is behind the thought. For example, if your mind is obsessively attacked by thoughts of rape or suicide, you should quietly, in a firm tone, command the evil spirit behind the thought to get out of your mind using the Name of Jesus Christ. This is what to say, “You evil spirit that causes me to think of rape, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ, get out of my mind.” Repeatedly say this and you will discover that within a short time the obsession will disappear. This is one of the first steps to living victoriously against unwanted thoughts, demonic oppression and winning the battle of the mind.

Demonic possession, obsession and oppression may not be recognized by some professionals as means by which an individual can be tempted to act evil. The fact that an evil spirit can influence a man to do evil cannot be denied. There are cases all over the Bible where evil spirits control, manipulate and influence men and women to do evil.
