Day 1
How can I find renewal and restoration?

“He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul” (Ps. 23:2-3). Most likely you have heard this passage quoted more times than you can count. No matter how often this much-loved psalm is recited, however, we still seem to miss the full impact of the message: God restores our souls.

How does He do this? He restores our souls through fellowship with Himself. Even though at times we stray far from Him, He remains the Good Shepherd. Though we wander, He receives us back gladly and willingly pardons His wayward sheep. Why would we ever leave such a loving Guide? Most likely you have never made a conscious decision to forsake the Father; instead, you may have slipped away slowly and subtly as a result of wandering desires and selfish attempts to meet your own needs. But when you strive to attain comfort and safety apart from God, you stray farther and farther away from Him.

Luke 15 presents a wonderful picture of the warm reception awaiting a lost “sheep.” Did the shepherd scold or punish the wayward lamb? No. Instead, all of heaven celebrated because the lost had been found. Likewise, heaven rejoices when a wandering child of God returns “to the fold.” Jesus tells us, “There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance” (Luke 15:7).

In restoring our souls, God is more than a pardoning Shepherd. He is also a Shepherd that provides. He knows what we need before we even ask, and He delights in meeting our needs (Matt. 7:9–11). That means He knows what you need physically, emotionally, and spiritually, right now. In fact, He is already at work, accomplishing and providing the things you need, even though you may not even have thought of them yet.

Finally, God is our protecting Shepherd. What comforts the psalmist in Psalm 23:4? It is the Lord’s rod and staff. Ancient shepherds used these tools to defend their sheep from vicious animals seeking a quick meal. In the same way, God moves before us, clearing the way of the enemy’s snares.

Have you experienced God’s provision, only to fall into subsequent doubt and fear because of loss or hardship? God has not left you. He remains your Good Shepherd, leading you through the darkness and into the light. It is there in His presence that He will pardon, provide for, and protect you. Always.

'He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside still waters. He restoreth my soul: He guideth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. '
Psalms 23:2-4

Day 2

Francis Marion, The “Swamp Fox”

Francis Marion (1732–1795) was a brigadier general in the South Carolina Militia during the American Revolutionary War. He became known as the “Swamp Fox” because he set up his base of operations in a swamp. “Marion’s Brigade” was a volunteer force that could assemble at a moment’s notice, hit British and Loyalist units and garrisons, and then disappear into the swamps. He is considered one of the fathers of modern guerrilla warfare.

While the British occupied most of the southern colonies, large-scale resistance was impossible. Marion and his patriot unit was a powerful force in the south, as Nathanael Greene later wrote in praise: “Surrounded on every side with a superior force, hunted from every quarter with veteran troops, you have found means to elude their attempts and keep alive the expiring hopes of an oppressed militia.”

After the war, Marion served in the state senate of South Carolina for several terms. He stated: “Who can doubt that God created us to be happy, and thereto made us to love one another? It is plainly written as the Gospel. The heart is sometimes so embittered that nothing but Divine love can sweeten it, so enraged that devotion can only becalm it, and so broken down that it takes all the forces of heavenly hope to raise it. In short, the religion of Jesus Christ is the only sure and controlling power over sin.”

'And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto him, and said unto him, Jehovah is with thee, thou mighty man of valor. '
Judges 6:12

Day 3

On the Seal of the State of Rhode Island, over the picture of an anchor, is inscribed the motto: IN GOD WE HOPE.

'O Jehovah, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be put to shame. They that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken Jehovah, the fountain of living waters. '
Jeremiah 17:13

Day 4

In God We Hope

On the Seal of the State of Rhode Island, over the picture of an anchor, is inscribed the motto: IN GOD WE HOPE.

'O Jehovah, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be put to shame. They that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken Jehovah, the fountain of living waters. '
Jeremiah 17:13

Day 5 Hope

Every day at House of Hope we have the opportunity to experience God riding the heavens to be our refuge.

'There is none like unto God, O Jeshurun, Who rideth upon the heavens for thy help, And in his excellency on the skies. The eternal God is thy dwelling-place, And underneath are the everlasting arms. And he thrust out the enemy from before thee, And said, Destroy. '
Deuteronomy 33:26-27

Kathy’s life is a perfect example. Kathy, along with her two older sisters, was put up for adoption when she was a baby. Her growing-up years were spent moving from one foster home to another, being sexually abused in many of them. At fourteen she decided she couldn’t stand it anymore, so she ran away, spending many nights sleeping on a cold, concrete slab behind a gas station.

One day Kathy decided to go to church, where she was directed to House of Hope. While staying with us, she located her biological mother and learned she had given up her children because she was too poor to care for them. Kathy then located her two older sisters, and they and their mother came to visit Kathy. What a joyous reunion that was!

Today Kathy is married to a fine Christian man. They have four darling children, and the entire family is serving God. What could have ended in heartbreak and tragedy instead resulted in a life dedicated to the Lord because God became Kathy’s refuge, holding her up with His everlasting arms.

If you feel your life is headed for tragedy and you have no hope, remember what God did for Kathy. He wants to do the same for you. Will you pray this prayer? “Dear God, please direct my steps to just the right person to help me get the healing I desperately need. I put my hope in You.”

Day 6 Where Our Hope Lies

'He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, saying that the Son of man must be delivered up into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. And they remembered his words, and returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest. Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James: and the other women with them told these things unto the apostles. And these words appeared in their sight as idle talk; and they disbelieved them. But Peter arose, and ran unto the tomb; and stooping and looking in, he seeth the linen cloths by themselves; and he departed to his home, wondering at that which was come to pass. '
Luke 24:6-12

I came across a fascinating list of questions lately that all have the same answer. Can you guess what it is?

* What gives a widow courage as she stands beside a fresh grave?

* What is the ultimate hope of the cripple, the amputee, the abused, or the burn victim?

* How can parents of a brain-damaged or physically handicapped child keep from living their lives totally and completely depressed?

* Where do the thoughts of a young couple go when they finally recover from the terrible grief of losing their baby?

* When a family receives the tragic news that a dad was killed in a plane crash or a son overdosed on drugs, what single truth becomes its whole focus?

* What is the final answer to pain, mourning, senility, insanity, terminal diseases, sudden calamities, and fatal accidents?

The answer to each of these questions is the hope God gives us because of the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. The pivotal point in all of human history is the resurrection of Christ. The one thing that separates Christianity from other religions is that God conquered death. Since Jesus Christ has defeated death, He can offer eternal life to all who believe in Him!

He is risen! Yes, Christ is risen indeed!

Day 7

How can I feel secure in the Lord during troubled times?

'Jehovah answer thee in the day of trouble; The name of the God of Jacob set thee up on high; Send thee help from the sanctuary, And strengthen thee out of Zion; Remember all thy offerings, And accept thy burnt-sacrifice; Grant thee thy heart’s desire, And fulfil all thy counsel. We will triumph in thy salvation, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners: Jehovah fulfil all thy petitions. '
Psalms 20:1-5

Of one thing you can be certain in any time of trouble, suffering, hardship, difficulty, pain, or tragedy: The Lord is with you! Time and again in His Word, the Lord assures you of His presence:

* “The LORD is with you while you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you” (2 Chr. 15:2).

* “Stand still and see the salvation of the LORD, who is with you. . . . Do not fear or be dismayed” (2 Chr. 20:17).

* “May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble; may the name of the God of Jacob defend you. . . . May He grant you according to your heart’s desire, and fulfill your purpose” (Ps. 20:1, 4).

* Do not be afraid of him,” says the LORD, “for I am with you, to save you and deliver you from his hand” (Jer. 42:11).

* “Be strong, all you people of the land,” says the LORD, “and work; for I am with you” (Hag. 2:4).

Jesus said the same thing to His disciples: “I am with you always” (Matt. 28:20).

The apostle Paul considered this truth and asked, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom. 8:31). Don’t answer his question too quickly! For the truth is, many people can rise up against us. They can cheat us, harass us, persecute us, insult us, mock us, physically injure us, even kill us. But here’s the point: In the end, they can never win.

That is why Jesus could say, “You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But not a hair of your head shall be lost” (Luke 21:16-18). If you belong to God, you are on the winning side. Period.

When rough times come, immerse yourself in God’s Word. Read His promises to you, His beloved child. Read about His power, His strength, His wisdom, and His love. Read how He has helped countless men and women through the ages as they trusted in Him. Read about His saving, delivering, and restoring power.

The more you read and study God’s Word, the stronger your faith will grow.

The more you trust God, the more you will grow in your understanding that He is trustworthy in all things, at all times.

The more you take courage in the Lord’s presence with you, the more secure you will feel – even in the most troubling of times and the most trying of circumstances.

The Lord alone is your security, every moment of your life.

Day 8

The Dream Lives On

If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them.
Leviticus 26:3

Imagine a world without sin. No problem is too great to be solved. No one goes without food. Everyone’s needs are met. People live in peace and prosperity. Justice reigns. There is no crime. Death is unknown.

Down through history, various groups have grasped at that utopian ideal. None has succeeded. Yet the dream lives on, and for good reason: That was God’s original intention for His creation. He made a perfect world and placed humankind in it with a mandate to “be fruitful and multiply” (Gen. 1:28). Likewise, He has promised to someday restore His creation to its original purpose and perfection (Rev. 21:1–4).

In the meantime, humanity must live with the memory of what Eden was and the hope of what the new creation will be. God helps people keep alive that vision of life with Him—which sometimes seems more like a dream—by offering occasional glimpses of it:

1. Genesis describes what Eden was like (Gen. 1:1—2:25). The account tells of a world that was “very good” as God determines “good” (1:31).

2. In the Law, God promised to bless His people Israel with a land of peace and prosperity if they upheld His commandments (Lev. 26:3). Life in the Promised Land would not be a return to Eden, but it would have much of the same character. For example, God promised to make the people “fruitful” and help them “multiply” (26:9). (Note that this was a covenant agreement.)

3. In the Psalms, the world as it is, even in its fallen condition, is full of the “possessions” of the Lord. He has not left it to fend for itself. He maintains the earth and its creatures and rejoices in His works (Ps. 104:24–30).

4. Isaiah foresaw new heavens and a new earth. There will be no more weeping or, by implication, sin, or death. God’s people will build houses in a renewed Jerusalem and will do meaningful, satisfying work (Is. 65:17–23).

5. Paul also looks forward to the day when creation will be set free from its “futility,” a day when God’s people will finally be “delivered from the bondage of corruption” (Rom. 8:19–25).

God’s people live in hope. They base their lives on the promise that God’s original design and purpose will not be crushed under the terrible load of sin, rebellion, and condemnation. Instead, because of Christ, they look forward to the day when they will enter a new world to live with God forever.

Day 9

Attributes of God

He Is Personal

'I am Jehovah, and there is none else; besides me there is no God. I will gird thee, though thou hast not known me; that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none besides me: I am Jehovah, and there is none else. I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace, and create evil; I am Jehovah, that doeth all these things. '
Isaiah 45:5-7

God is the Ultimate Being. He is a living, speaking, loving, feeling, and seeking God. Though He is spirit (John 4:24), He has intellect (1 Cor. 2:10, 11), will (Dan. 4:35), and emotions (Deut. 4:21, 24), and He communicates with us (Job 22:21, 22; Prov. 2:6). One of the pervading themes in Scripture is God’s desire for a personal relationship with the man and woman whom He created in His image.

God has used nearly every relationship of personal commitment we know to reveal Himself to us: husband (Jer. 31:32), father (Gal. 4:6, 7), mother (Is. 49:15), brother (Prov. 18:24), lover (Song), bridegroom (Rev. 19:7–9), shepherd (Ps. 23), creator and designer (Ps. 139:13–16), king (Ps. 10:16), provider (Matt. 6:25–33), protector (Jer. 20:11), teacher (Ps. 25:8–12), counselor (Is. 9:6), friend (John 15:14, 15), physician (Matt. 9:12, 13), master (Luke 16:13), servant (Mark 10:45), and military commander (Eph. 6:11–18).

The ultimate communication of God to us is Jesus (John 1:18; 10:30; 12:45; 14:9). Only the God of the Bible is the living God. He was not made by human hands (Is. 45:5–7; Col. 1:15–17; Rev. 1:8), but He made and fashioned the world and all that is in it (Ps. 100:3; 115:15; Eccl. 3:11). His greatest glory is found in His creation with whom He is personally and intimately involved and of whom Christ is the crowning expression.

Day 10

Attributes of God

He Is Sovereign

'Know therefore this day, and lay it to thy heart, that Jehovah he is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath; there is none else. ' Deuteronomy 4:39

God alone is accountable to no one and is supreme in power, rank, authority, virtues, decrees, and work (Ps. 115:3). Strictly speaking, the title “Sovereign” belongs only to Him (Deut. 4:39).

Everything depends on God (Col. 1:16, 17), but He depends on nothing. Everything came from Him, but He came from nowhere because He has no beginning and no end (Ps. 90:2). He is the “I AM” (Ex. 3:14), the one of a kind (Is. 43:10, 11).

Since all life comes from Him, He rightfully retains ultimate authority (1 Tim. 6:15) and will do what He pleases (Ps. 135:6). He needs counsel from no one, and no one qualifies to give Him counsel (Rom. 9:20). The title “King of Kings” means just that. Even among kings, He is The King (Ps. 47:6, 7). This Sovereign One does not make occasional raids into our lives and world events; rather, He is intimately involved in the life of each person (Matt. 10:30) and rules the universe completely and perfectly (Is. 40:21–28).
