The truth is science and Christianity are complementary. Today a wide range of scholars recognize that Christianity provided both intellectual presuppositions and moral sanction for the development of modern science.

It’s very clear that science “works”. We can explain and predict how nature will behave over an extraordinary range of scales. It is how we project the weather. There are various limits to scientific understanding but, within these limits, science makes a complete and compelling picture.

It is the Christian world which finally gave birth in a clear, articulate fashion to the experimental method of science itself. We are all the stuff of the universe, absolutely embedded within, and subject to, the rules which govern nature. Because we’re self-aware, one can argue that the universe is self-aware.

Without an intelligible design it would be impossible for humans to have free will as all actions would be as a consequence of the will of the director. Free will is a fundamental element of Christian doctrine.

Our bodies need protein, and proteins contain nitrogen. The air we breathe has plenty of nitrogen to satisfy our needs. But-that nitrogen is not available to us directly from the air. The only way we can get nitrogen is from the plants we eat, or from the animals we eat that eat the plants.

A nitrogen molecule in the air consists of two atoms which are held together very tightly. In order for us to absorb nitrogen, the two atoms must be separated. But the two atoms are held together so tightly that our body chemistry does not have enough energy to process them.

This is where lightning comes in. Obviously we don't have to be struck by lighting in order to satisfy our need for nitrogen!

However, in a thunderstorm there is enough electrical energy in lightning to separate the nitrogen atoms in the air. Once the atoms are separated they can fall to earth with rain water, and combine with minerals in the soil to form nitrates, a type of fertilizer.

The nitrogen-containing nitrates in the soil are absorbed by the plants, and when we eat the plants or the animals which eat the plants, we get the nitrogen in a form which our bodies can use.

So, in addition to providing a spectacular light show, and scaring us to death, lightning also helps fertilize the soil.

The universe isn’t the only aspect of the cosmos that has to be finely tuned to permit life. Let’s bring our analysis a little closer to home. By “closer,” we mean our own solar system.

Most of us live fairly comfortably in our solar system, but that wouldn’t be the case in any other known solar system. All solar systems are not created equal when it comes to supporting life. Our sun is not just a plain ol’ star among the billions of others in the Milky Way Galaxy. Our sun has a planetary system (the “solar system”), which is made up of the earth and seven other planets—along with the various planetary moons, asteroid belts, and the recently demoted Pluto. Our solar system has certain features that allow life, but these features are not common to all other solar systems. Here are the unique features of our solar system for which you can thank God:

• A solar system that has one, and only one, star. With more than one star, tidal interactions would throw the Planet Earth’s orbit out of whack. If we had no star, then the planet would be a frozen mass that could not support life.

• A solar system with a star of the right age. Newly formed stars have burning rates and temperatures that fluctuate. But if your star is too old, then the luminosity rate changes too quickly to allow life.

• A star in your solar system that is the correct size. If a solar system’s star is too large, then you have those pesky luminosity fluctuations that keep its planets from supporting life. Too small, and you’ve got a host of other problems, such as tidal forces that knock the planet’s rotational period out of sync and not enough ultraviolet radiation for plants. Ninety-nine percent of all stars are the wrong size for what you’re looking for in a life-supporting solar system.

• A star that is the correct distance from the planet. If a planet is too far away from its star, then the temperature on the planet’s surface would be too cool to permit a stable water evaporation cycle. Too close, and the climate is too warm to allow a stable water evaporation cycle. If the distance between the earth to the sun differed by just 2 percent, then no life would be possible. This parameter eliminates 99 percent of all stars as candidates for a solar system that humans could call home.

Now, let’s get really up close and personal and see the permissible parameters for life on our own planet. All of the following factors affect the viability of life on this planet. A change in the parameters of any one of them would either prevent the existence of life—or make it extremely unpleasant:

• The orbital pattern around the sun: a change could produce extreme variations that would make life impossible.
• The tilt of the earth’s axis: the differential in the surface temperature would be too extreme.
• The speed of the earth’s rotation: temperature changes and wind velocities would be too great.
• The age of the earth: if the earth were much younger, then it would rotate too fast. If it were much older, it would rotate too slowly.
• The ratio of oxygen to nitrogen in the earth’s atmosphere: life functions would be severely impacted by any change in this ratio.

Is it pure dumb luck that we humans landed on Planet Earth, or could life be the same (or better) if we had landed somewhere else? Don’t pack your bags yet, because you may not have many options. Unlike our own solar system, most stars have only one planet in their respective systems. It has been estimated that there might be a trillion galaxies, with possibly one hundred billion stars per galaxy. With one planet per star, that gives us the prospect of one hundred billion trillion planets. According to Dr. Hugh Ross, the odds of getting all the necessary factors for the existence of life on a single planet are one trillionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of 1 percent. But you’ve only got one hundred billion trillion available planets. The odds against finding another suitable planet are astronomical.

This ought to tell you two things: First, you don’t have any realistic options for living on any other planet. Second, you should revel in the knowledge that God was so precise and intentional in placing you on a planet that was tailor-made for human existence.
