What is Living Water?

These are the key scriptures I found that illustrate the meaning of living water:
  • John 4:14: “But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life”.
  • John 7:38: “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water”.
  • Jeremiah 17:13: “O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who forsake You will be put to shame. Those who turn away on earth will be written down, because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, even the Lord”
  • Zechariah 14:8-9: “And on that day living waters will flow out of Jerusalem…”
Living water can be understood in various ways, but the clearest way that I've found is that living water is a symbol for salvation and a true knowledge of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. God provides us with everything we need and is the “living water” that He continues to always give to us through the Holy Spirit.

living water refers to the indwelling Holy Spirit

Jesus uses the phrase living water in two instances in the Bible. The first is in John 4. Jesus and His disciples had traveled into Samaria. Jesus was tired and sat at a well while His disciples went into a nearby town to buy food. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus asked her for a drink (verse 7). The Samaritan woman was quite shocked because Jesus was a Jew, and Jews and Samaritans had a long history of mutual animosity. She naturally asked Him why He was speaking to her, since He was Jewish.

.
John 3:5 . . I say unto you: except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot
enter into the kingdom of God.

The water ingredient utilized in the procedure for a Spirit birth isn't specifically
labeled living water; so it wouldn't be all that unreasonable to posit that the water
of John 3:5 is telling of some other variety; for example water for bathing.

Eph 5:26-27 . . Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he
might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might
present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such
thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Heb 10:21-22 . . Having an high priest over the house of God; let us draw near
with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil
conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

The salient characteristic of living water is its use as a beverage instead of
washing.

John 4:10-14 . . If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a
drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.
Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him
will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

John 7:37-38 . . If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever
believes in me, as the scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from
within him.

Rev 22:17 . . Let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the
water of life freely.

FAQ: The water of life is supernatural?

REPLY: Yes.

FAQ: It's a free-bee?

REPLY: Yes.

FAQ: How might an interested inquirer obtain it?

REPLY: By means of a clear and concise RSVP

I recommend finding some privacy, cover your face with your hands for a sense of
connection, and then simply tell Christ in your own words that you'd like to take
advantage of his offer.

* Be brave. If Jesus was favorably inclined to give a drink of living water to that
naughty girl of Samaria, then I think it safe to be confident he'll give you a drink of
it too.

THE POWER OF LIVING WATER

JOHN 7:38–39
“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit.

The greatest danger to any ancient city during a time of siege was not the enemy without; it was the lack of resources within. More often than not, when an army like the Assyrians attacked a walled city like Jerusalem, they would simply surround the city and wait for it to run out of food and water. Then, when the people were weak and desperate, the city could be taken almost without a fight. But Hezekiah made sure that would not happen to Jerusalem. He rerouted a spring of water outside the city walls so it flowed inside the walls of the city.

Interestingly, Jesus referred often to the Holy Spirit as the living water given by God to the believer which constitutes a secret, powerful resource in times of trouble. When you have the Holy Spirit living inside of you, you possess a resource that can give you abundant life through the longest siege of the enemy. The enemy can camp at your doorstep for an indefinite period of time and it won’t matter to you. The Holy Spirit is your indwelling source of life.

David Jeremiah, Sanctuary: Finding Moments of Refuge in the Presence of God

In our modern days, where we can just open a faucet and see water running to satisfy our needs, it is difficult to imagine the importance of finding a spring, particularly in the Middle East.

Water contained in dwells could be poisoned by the enemies or be the source of diseases. Dwells also dried out eventually.
A spring, however, was a reliable source to quench the thirst and keep things alive.

The Gospel is like a reliable source of fresh water to humans who wander through the desert.

Correct, salvation comes only to those who recognize their desperate need for the spiritual life they do not have. Living water can be obtained only by those who recognize that they are spiritually thirsty.

Like you said The gospel (Jesus) is our reliable source

Great topic of discussion we just went through a 6 week series on John 4 with Jesus and the Samaritan woman.
NOW WHEN the Lord knew (learned, became aware) that the Pharisees had been told that Jesus was winning and baptizing more disciples than John—
2 Though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples—
3 He left Judea and returned to Galilee.
4 It was necessary for Him to go through Samaria.
5 And in doing so, He arrived at a Samaritan town called Sychar, near the tract of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 And Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, tired as He was from His journey, sat down [to rest] by the well. It was then about the sixth hour (about noon).
7 Presently, when a woman of Samaria came along to draw water, Jesus said to her, Give Me a drink—
8 For His disciples had gone off into the town to buy food—
9 The Samaritan woman said to Him, How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan [and a] woman, for a drink?—For the Jews have nothing to do with the Samaritans—
10 Jesus answered her, If you had only known and had recognized God’s gift and Who this is that is saying to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him [instead] and He would have given you living water.
11 She said to Him, Sir, You have nothing to draw with [no drawing bucket] and the well is deep; how then can You provide living water? [Where do You get Your living water?]
12 Are You greater than and superior to our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well and who used to drink from it himself, and his sons and his cattle also?
13 Jesus answered her, All who drink of this water will be thirsty again.
14 But whoever takes a drink of the water that I will give him shall never, no never, be thirsty any more. But the water that I will give him shall become a spring of water welling up (flowing, bubbling) [continually] within him unto (into, for) eternal life.
15 The woman said to Him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may never get thirsty nor have to come [continually all the way] here to draw.
16 At this, Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband and come back here.
17 The woman answered, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have spoken truly in saying, I have no husband.
18 For you have had five husbands, and the man you are now living with is not your husband. In this you have spoken truly.
19 The woman said to Him, Sir, I see and understand that You are a prophet.
20 Our forefathers worshiped on this mountain, but you [Jews] say that Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary and proper to worship.
21 Jesus said to her, Woman, believe Me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither [merely] in this mountain nor [merely] in Jerusalem.
22 You [Samaritans] do not know what you are worshiping [you worship what you do not comprehend]. We do know what we are worshiping [we worship what we have knowledge of and understand], for [after all] salvation comes from [among] the Jews.
23 A time will come, however, indeed it is already here, when the true (genuine) worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth (reality); for the Father is seeking just such people as these as His worshipers.
24 God is a Spirit (a spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (reality).
25 The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming, He Who is called the Christ (the Anointed One); and when He arrives, He will tell us everything we need to know and make it clear to us.
26 Jesus said to her, I Who now speak with you am He.
John 4:1–26.

Today we hear about the living water that Jesus makes available to all those who put their trust in Him, the living waters of both eternal life and God the Holy Spirit.

That fits perfectly with John 4:10,14; 7:37-39. I believe that also fits with the water in John 3:5.
