Ezra 1:1

  • We are told when!

  • In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia!

  • So right at the beginning of his reign!

  • We are told why!

  • To fulfill the word of Yah·weh!

  • We are told about how Yah·weh did it!

  • He stirred the spirit of Cyrus!

  • We are told about what he did!

  • He sent a proclamation throughout his kingdom!

Ezra 1:2
  • It says that Yah·weh has appointed Cyrus to build a house for him at Jerusalem in Judah!

  • The boss is Cyrus!

  • And he is the one who has authorized the rebuilding of Jerusalem!

Ezra 1:3

  • The Jews are invited to go back to Jerusalem and rebuild the house of Yah·weh!

  • Apparently it is not an obligation!

  • Only those who are willing may go back!

Ezra 1:4

  • So those who will go back to Jerusalem to rebuild it will get silver, gold, goods and livestock!

  • It looks like when Israel left Egypt!

Ezra 1:5

  • So the family heads of Judah and Benjamin and the priests and the levites go up to Jerusalem to rebuild the house of Yah·weh!

  • Yah·weh stirs their spirits!

  • We can imagine it’s a big business!

  • Everything has to be done!

  • There is nothing left!

Ezra 1:6

  • Here is a copy of verse 4!

  • It highlights the fact that the exiles didn’t come back empty-handed!

  • Not to forget that they came back to a place completely abandoned!

Ezra 1:7

  • Cyrus not only permitted the rebuilding of Jerusalem!

  • He also gave back all the religious articles of the temple of Yah·weh stolen by Nebuchadnezzar!

  • Thus he showed respect to Yah·weh!

Ezra 1:8

  • Cyrus had them brought out by Mithredath the treasurer!

  • And Mithredath counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah!

  • Everything was made officially!

  • It was well done so nothing would lack!

  • It showed again high respect to Yah·weh!

Ezra 1:9
