I am considered a Pentecostal

I am considered Pentecostal because I speak in tongues as the Lord has gifted me. When I was a boy 8-12 in the sixties, the only religious influence in my life at that time was my Methodist mother and one of her bibles. I read the four gospels and Acts and totally expected people to speak in tongues once they were saved. So it was no surprise to me that it happened to me.

Here is my testimony of being baptized with the Holy Spirit.

After many years of conviction, I repented of sin and began a new life to God by faith in Christ. I was just a babe in Christ and was home alone on my knees worshiping and praying to my Savior when this wonderful sensation began in my belly and started to whelm up and spread upwards my esophagus. It was the most pleasant feeling. As it was spreading upwards, my throat and tongue began to feel stiff, at this point I became fearful of what was happening to me and stopped worshiping. Immediately the sensation subsided and withdrew the same path it took. In my spirit these words rang out, "when you are at church ask to be baptized in the Holy Spirit".

A couple of weeks later at Church the Pastor asked for anyone needing prayer to come forward. Many people went up to the front and were prayed for by the Pastor and the Elders. As they began praying for people, without knowing a reason why, I went up to the altar too. I began to question myself why I was up there, and as the Pastor and Elders worked their way down to the end where I was standing, the words rang out in my spirit to ask to be baptized with the Holy Spirit. As the group of men moved my way from the person on my left, my Pastor stopped in front of me and kindly asked me what I needed. I was so anxious and could barely get the words out of my mouth, and then the Pastor and the Elders laid their hands on me and prayed.

The very same thing that happened when I was home alone praying began to happen again. This time it wasn't fear that stopped me from receiving but doubt. As soon as the thought of doubt, "is this really of God" shot through my mind, the inward sensation subsided the same way it did earlier when I was in fear. I became resolved to believe that which was happening to me was in fact of God. As soon as I made that resolution in myself the sensation began again, and this time I fully believed and gave myself over to worshiping God without fear.

The next thing I experienced was as if I was slowly waking up. I noticed that my arms were lifted up and my mouth was moving with noise coming out. As I became more aware of my surroundings, I realized that I was worshiping God inwardly and expressing it through my mouth. I lowered my arms and looked around to gather my bearings. I was in such a state of euphoria, and unbeknownst to me I was up there for a good while and the service had let out. Many people were still there praising God and expressing their joy for what had happened to me. As I sat down to gather myself together, those who stayed came by and expressed their joy with me. Assuming from what they were saying, but not really knowing, I asked my wife if I spoke in tongues, she laughed and answered with a resounding, yeah, did you ever!

That was many decades ago and to this day I worship God in other languages as the Spirit of God has enabled me. Back then I was just like a kid not knowing the use or the value of that which was given to me, but now because of the anointing of the Holy Spirit, I’m able to worship God with my spirit and my mind. And the gift that was given to me for edification is also used to benefit other believers in their faith and worship of God.

I’ve testified about this event so that you may know that Jesus Christ is truly the Son of God, and that God's gift of the Holy Spirit and His empowering gifts are true as recorded in the Bible.

God Bless,
Joe

I believe tongues are for every child of God.

Paul spoke of corporate interpreted tongues or miraculous tongues of another language that it was not a gift for everyone.

But of personal tongues in 1 Cor. 14:18, Paul implied anyone could have spoke in tongues more than him.

If anyone has asked for tongues and been disappointed and not felt able, there are three major blockages:

1. Resentment. Any kind of unforgiveness and offense will be an impedance to reception.

2. Involvement with the occult of any kind. Occultic practices, beliefs, and even movies, books and games. This produces major obstacles.

3. Unbelief. Often associated with legalism and false religion. He that comes to God must believe he is a rewarder of them who seek.

Tongues have been a tremendous help in my life.

Mainly for when I am facing particular spiritual warfare or run out of things to pray.

I am fine with Tongues also. I believe it's very effective as a prayer language. The gift of tongues is also probably the most controversial gift Paul discusses. He had to teach the Corinthians that believers are not inferior or superior if they lack or possess a certain gift As they believed speaking in tongues made them superior to other believers that did not have this gift.

And gifts are given by/from the spirit which is why not all have the same gifts. If we were all ears we would be blind, if we were all eyes we would be deaf, if we were all arms we could not walk and so on and so forth. If we all spoke with the gif of tongues the same thig applies which is why there are a variety of gifts that are distributed by the holy Spirit to each as HE wills, not as we will or desire. In fact Paul says to desire the greater gifts which are outlined in 1 cor 13.

The Gift of Salvation is the only gift I will ever need. Although I would like to know how to skydive. On my way to town I drive by a small landing strip where they teach skydiving. Maybe one day I'll stop by and look into it. What do they call that, A bucket list?

True but the body needs your spiritual gift or gifts to be used to be healthy :)

Oh I agree, I know what my spiritual gift is and it just comes natural. I have the gift of encouragement. So Civic would you like to go skydiving with me?

My Spiritual gift of encouragement only is available when it's needed.

No thx but would you like to go swimming with the sharks with me ? 😂

I originally spoke in tongues for years, then read in the bible that I should pray to translate.

I did this, but could no longer relate to pentecostal or charismatic theology.

Your "study" was very poor, there are more than one kind of tongues.

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him;
however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. (1 Cor. 14:2 NKJ)

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. (1 Cor. 14:14 NKJ)

Clearly here:

1. The tongues are addressed to God and not any human.
2. The understanding is unfruitful, therefore they are never translated.

I'm sorry to hear if you ripped this verse out of your bible, but it's there.

For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say. (1 Corinthians 14:13)

Okay if you want to violate the logic that was plainly laid out, tell me this:

18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;
19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding,
that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue. (1 Cor. 14:18-19 NKJ)

If Paul automatically assumed all tongues were translated, why would he ever mind more tongues in church, since it only means more supernatural translating for everyone?

See, nothing is being "ripped" out of context.

You just jumped to false conclusions.

You quoted verse 12 and then 14, you skipped 13 which I was referring to. Then accused me of false study.

Arf arf, shame on you for being dogmatic like that.

The whole point of the gifts is to build up the body of Christ.

The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified. (1 Corinthians 14:5)

This is why prophecy is superior to tongues unless there is a translation. Since tongues represent uttering deep mysteries of the spirit, praying to translate and speaking the message in the common tongue provides the same level of edification as prophecy.

My original reply was expressing my experience of speaking in tongues then following scripture's instruction to pray to translate. Baptist and Pentecostals alike tend to take opportunity to try to correct my theology, when I'm just sharing my experience of how to apply what the bible is saying. So alienated a little, just a little.

You are not "applying" what the Bible is saying, you are "changing" what the Bible is saying.

Verse 13 does not somehow change the logic of anything I said.
