Verse 19. “Because that which may be known of God,....“ There are some things which could not be known of God by the light of nature; as a trinity of persons in the Godhead; the knowledge of God in Christ as Mediator; the God-man and Mediator Jesus Christ; his incarnation, sufferings, death, and resurrection; the will of God to save sinners by a crucified Jesus; the several peculiar doctrines of the Gospel, particularly the resurrection of the dead, and the manner of worshipping of God with acceptance: but then there are some things which may be known of God, without a revelation. Adam had a perfect knowledge of him; and his sons, though fallen, even the very Heathens have some notion of him, as that there is a God; and by the light of nature it might be known that there is but one God, who is glorious, full of majesty, and possessed of all perfections, as that he is all powerful, wise, good and righteous: and this

“Is manifest in them,” or "to them"; by the light that is given them: it is light by which that which may be known of God is manifest; and this is the light of nature, which every man has that comes into the world; and this is internal, it is in him, in his mind and conscience, and is communicated to him by God, and that by infusion or inspiration; see Job 32:8;

“For God hath showed [it] unto them;” what may be known of him by that light; and which is assisted and may be improved by a consideration of the works of creation and Providence.



Verse 20. “For the invisible things of him,....” Not the angels, the invisible inhabitants of heaven: nor the unseen glories of another world; nor the decrees of God; nor the persons in the Godhead; but the perfections of God, or his "properties," as the Arabic version reads it; and which are explained by "his eternal power and Godhead."

“From the creation of the world are clearly seen;” this is no new discovery, but what men have had, and might, by the light of nature, have enjoyed ever since the world was created; these

“Being understood,” in an intellectual way, by the discursive faculty of the understanding,

“By the things that are made;” the various works of creation; all which proclaim the being, unity, and perfections of God their Creator,

“So that they are without excuse;” the very Heathens, who have even only the light of nature, and are destitute of a revelation, have no color or pretext for their idolatrous practices, and vicious lives; nor have they, nor will they have anything to object to God's righteous judgment against them, or why they should not be condemned.

Verse 19. “That which may be known of God” - That which is “knowable” concerning God. The expression implies that there may be many things concerning God which cannot be known. But there are also many things which may be ascertained. Such are his existence, and many of his attributes, his power, and wisdom, and justice, etc. The object of the apostle was not to say that everything pertaining to God could be known by them, or that they could have as clear a view of him as if they had possessed a revelation. We must interpret the expression according to the object which he had in view. That was to show that so much might be known of God as to prove that they had no excuse for their crimes; or that God would be just in punishing them for their deeds. For this, it was needful only that his existence and his justice, or his determination to punish sin, should be known; and this, the apostle affirms, was known among them, and had been from the creation of the world. This expression. therefore, is not to be pressed as implying that they knew all that could be known about God, or that they knew as much as they who had a revelation; but that they knew enough to prove that they had no excuse for their sins.

“God hath showed it to them” - Compare John 1:9. He had endowed them with reason and conscience Romans 2:14-15; he had made them capable of seeing and investigating his works; he had spread before them the proofs of his wisdom, and goodness, and power, and had thus given them the means of learning his perfections and will.

Verse 20. “For the invisible things of him” - The expression “his invisible things” refers to those things which cannot be perceived by the senses. It does not imply that there are any things pertaining to the divine character which may be seen by the eye; but that there are things which may be known of him, though not discoverable by the eye. We judge of the objects around us by the senses, the sight, the touch, the ear, etc. Paul affirms, that though we cannot judge thus of God, yet there is a way by which we may come to the knowledge of him. What he means by the invisible things of God he specifies at the close of the verse, “his eternal power and Godhead.” The affirmation extends only to that; and the argument implies that that was enough to leave them without any excuse for their sins.

Romans 1:21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts.

says they hold the truth in unrighteousness...they know the truth but ignore it.

These lines are often called the Universal Witness to HIS power and glory and refer to their being evident when we study HIS creation...EXCEPT,

there is absolutely NO EVIDENCE IN HISTORY that anyone who studied the nature of creation ever came to believe in the power and glory of Jehovah. In fact, without Christian teachers explaining this doctrine, no one has ever taught it. Is this a great world wide conspiracy to deny that they had already understood Jehovah before the missionaries arrived with these verses??

Think of the Hindus and Buddhists whose study of the nature of reality proves themselves to be of the divine essence and that they will become fully divine in their day. Proof of Jehovah? Not likely... If their damnation depended upon this verse to PROVE their lack of excuse, they will live forever.

This lack of reality for this interpretation of this verse demands a new look at it from a new pov...
"...the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen," "being understood by the things that are made" implies that these damned souls saw the creation of the world as per Job 38:7...while the morning stars sang together and ALL the sons of God shouted for joy? that clearly showed to them the proof of the invisible things they had previously rejected as lies, except this pov is never considered due to the bias orthodoxy has for the 'we are created on earth' theory.

Former missionary Daniel Everett reported that the Amazon people called the Pirahã (Hiatíihi or The Straight Ones) do not have gods nor a creation myth which, if true, makes this interpretation of the meaning of Rom 1:18-20 suspect.

Appreciate your reply, but not sure what you're trying to say overall. Concerning nature being a witness of God to man, it is to establish that man knows for certain there is a God. To "believe in God" is not the same as believing there is a God; the prior is cause enough for man to seek God; the latter is seeking God for faith in Him.

Ahhh, the problem is that your are contending that all man(kind) knows for certain there is a God whereas the verses you use tell us that all men know for certain that YHWH is GOD, quite a huge difference theologically, no?

Rom 1:18 The wrath of God (who is God?) is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness. 19 For what may be known about God (who is God?) is plain to them, because God (which God?) has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, (Who has invisible qualities of eternal power and a divine Nature??? Only YHWH!!!) being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts.

Do the following phrases make any sense at all if applied to some other god than YHWH?
- GOD has made known what can be known about HIM
- GOD's invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen
- they knew GOD...they knew HIM - not a wrong idea of HIM nor a fase god altogether! THEY KNEW GOD, not about a god or the necessity for a God or any other diminishing of why they had no excuse for their own damnation ! they knew YHWH...!!!

Atheists are real, those who depend on their sight understanding of reality as being the fullness of reality, no God necessary, which argues against your interpretation of these verses as does all the millennia of erroneous worship of demons as GOD!

And HIS proof? HIS proof is found in 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities...being understood from His workmanship.
Since is more properly rendered in English as from as in before as in the cause of later things...

There is no record of anyone learning of YHWH's eternal power and divinity from a study of HIS creation, HIS workmanship, if that only refers to a study of what we see now. It has never happened unless they knew about HIM before their study.

BUT we have record in the scriptures that every person made in HIS image as HIS children in fact saw the creation of the physical universe and thus knew HiS divinity and eternal power by their own experience and their own eyes...

Why is this ignored as referring only to angels and not to HIS sons on earth? Why is the fact that sinful angels were flung into the earth ignored, Rev 12:4-9? Why do people fight so hard to refuse to accept Matt 13:36-39 at face value that we are moved by GOD's will into mankind, and not created here? Why is it ignored that the wicked when they die RETURN to Sheol in the center of the earth from whence they came to mankind, Ps 9:17?

The only reason is that these interpretations were rejected by the earliest Rabbis, those paragons of theological accuracy, in favour of the creation of mankind happening on earth not in the heavens before the creation of physical universe and the acceptance of this interpretation by the Church Fathers eons later.
 
Ahhh, the problem is that your are contending that all man(kind) knows for certain there is a God whereas the verses you use tell us that all men know for certain that YHWH is GOD, quite a huge difference theologically, no?
Thanks for the reply. I see no difference between Yhwh and God. But there is a difference between just knowing there is a God, and knowing God!

All men all learned these things because HE made them plain to us as the proof of HIS divinity and eternal power. When did we learn these things ? since they were condemned already before their conception, Jn 3:18?

The revelation of God by the light of His creation has primarily to do with His "eternal power" (v20), i.e. that He is eternal, past present and future. Without the Spirit and the Word this is all the unbeliever will believe and understand--that He's powerful and forever.

"Even his eternal power and Godhead" “The true God, being eternal, is thereby distinguished from the fictitious gods of the heathens, who all had a beginning; the most ancient of them being represented as coming out of chaos, and their birth being sung by the heathen poets. Of the particular attributes of God, the apostle mentions only his power, because the effects of the divine power are what first strike the senses of men, and lead them most directly to the acknowledgment of a Deity. -Joseph Benson
